Therapists for college students near New York University
Hi there! I’m a somatic (body-focused), relational, and parts-work trauma and couples/relationship therapist, seeing clients all over NY state virtually. I specialize in working with folks who are: childhood and adulthood trauma survivors, LGBTQIA+, kink/BDSM-involved, polyamorous and non-monogamous, neurodivergent, chronically ill and in pain, disabled, and impacted by fatphobia. I’m entirely out-of-network/private pay and offer superbills to clients who need them to submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement.
Are you in the midst of navigating young adulthood, trying to carve out your own identity? This journey is exciting, yet it can also feel overwhelming and uncertain. Do you often feel the weight of expectations from family, friends, or society, pushing you toward specific paths—like what college to attend or which career to pursue? From the outside, is your life “together” or “on track” but on the inside, you’re struggling with anxiety and self-esteem? If so, you’re not alone. I’m here to help you explore who you are and who you truly want to be. It’s completely normal to experience anxiety, stress, or confusion during this pivotal time in your life. Your role in your family is changing as you grow into an adult. Social media and comparison may be making you feel inadequate. These are real and intense pressures of young-adulthood. Together, we’ll develop skills to make real change in managing your anxiety, building your self-esteem, and empowering you to embrace your authentic self. Utilizing a blend of Psychodynamic Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I guide young people in processing emotions, understanding past experiences, and developing concrete skills to feel more empowered and in control. Our therapy sessions will provide a safe and affirming space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. As an LGBTQ-affirming therapist, I create an inclusive space where people of all identities can feel accepted. This period of life is all about exploration and self-discovery, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
I am a licensed therapist with a twenty-four year experience working with adult individuals with a vast of life challenges to assist them in developing adaptive coping mechanisms and strategies to deal with their individual challenges. I am compassionate and truly enjoy what I do. I will be honored to form a working alliance with you and be able to allow you to be who you are in a nonjudgmental manner that fosters a sense of quality of life and overall well-being. My style or approach to therapy is what I call a “pot” as I borrow from various evidenced-based models, theories and interventions to create a unique working plan for everyone I work with. I do, however, draw heavily from the Strength Perspective, Client Center, Motivational Interviewing, Psycho- dynamic, Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to name a few. I expect my clients to take away from sessions with me is an enhanced knowledge of their strengths and meaningful ways to address their challenges. We will work together always respecting their autonomy and uniqueness as a person. In addition, I expect my clients to highlight their sense of self-worth, self-value, self-respect as a pathway to improve better outcomes from therapy.
I am a bilingual Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I make it my primary mission to foster a warm environment with a client first in order to ensure safety and trust. I believe when we show up as our authentic selves, we are better able to understand each other. I believe in meeting you the client where you are at and empowering you in pursuing “baby steps” for change. Here we will work on creating your best self by learning triggers, accepting the past, and incorporating coping skills in order to overcome emotional distress. I promote a safe, healing environment for individuals of diverse racial backgrounds, cultural backgrounds, religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, and body sizes. I practice from a person centered approach. Your life is not just about your presenting problem. Here I will look at you as a whole in an effort to understand how you interact in the different environments of your life that concerns your family, social circle, relationships, school life, work life, etc. Here you will have the safe space to address any issue that you want.
I believe therapy is a place where I can help facilitate your growth, where together we can help build a tool box that you can take with you into your life. I have a psychodynamic approach to treatment, mixing various interventions and modalities. I use an eclectic and integrative set of techniques in order to address the multiple ways in which we live in the world and experience our lives. Principles of equality, social justice, and rehabilitation drove me to the field of Social Work. But it is the incredibly rewarding experiences providing clinical services and advocacy for both adolescents and adults that has helped me to develop an incisive and expanded understanding of these principles. I am licensed (LCSW) by NY State to practice psychotherapy. I am a member of the National Association of Social Work. Whether it is your first time coming to therapy or you are interested in expanding your set of tools, therapy will offer a safe space to explore issues together. Please contact me for fee information. This site does not allow me to list pricing based on the type of appointment (Individual/Couples/Families).
Learning how to navigate life as a young adult is hard! You are trying to balance the demands of work or school, family, and friends, all while while figuring out who you are and who you want to be. As a driven and successful individual, you may put a lot of pressure on yourself and feel constrained by your own expectations. This can lead to constant self-doubt and feeling like you’re always reaching for an unattainable (or unrealistic) goal. You may be overextending yourself to others, and not focusing on yourself. Perhaps you have negative thought patterns or behaviors that are causing discomfort or you don’t always understand your reactions. Let’s work together to discover the barriers that are keeping you from finding balance in your life - taking care of yourself and setting boundaries is not selfish! I provide virtual therapy to clients located in New York, Florida, and internationally.

For over 40 years, I've worked with individuals, couples, families, & groups. From among the numerous treatment approaches in which I've trained, i custom tailor a way of working that best suits your needs. Thus, I start by listening to your concerns. Then together we can delineate goals. These can range from broad existential concerns, e.g. how you want to BE everyday, how to live "happier." . . to practical ways to improve your relationship(s), choose a career, reduce your anxiety or depression, manage your A.D.D. I work with local psychiatrists if you wish to consider, or manage, medication(s). I'm sorry but i do not accept any insurance (managed care was around when i started to practice). I'll help you find out if your insurance contract will reimburse you for an Out-of-Network (OON) Psychologist like myself. Also, since Covid, i've been working solely over Zoom. I look forward to hearing from you. Dr. Joy

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a degree in Mindfulness-based Transpersonal Counseling from Naropa University, in Boulder, Colorado. Mindfulness informs all aspects of my work, including my emphasis on creating a space of compassion and curiosity in which we can explore, experiment, and journey together. You can't do anything "wrong" in therapy; everything that happens can be mined for wisdom. I have primarily worked with people to address issues related to anxiety, depression, self-concept, and life transitions. I see therapy sessions as a balance between processing and skill-building, in which there is enough open space to explore and also enough direction to come away with concrete action steps to create the desired change. In addition to mindfulness, I have training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I frequently guide my clients in getting to know and work with "parts" of themselves. I bring a trauma-informed approach to all sessions, in which safety, empowerment, and self-compassion are held paramount. For trauma-specific work, I utilize my training in EMDR therapy to provide targeted interventions designed to desensitize and reprocess traumatic experiences in the brain. Above all else, I hold a steadfast hope for the ability of each and every person to heal and grow. It is truly an honor and privilege to join my clients in that journey.
College brings a mix of new freedom, academic pressure, shifting relationships, and questions about who you want to become. If you are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, mood changes, relationship stress, or the challenges of adjusting to college life, you deserve support that helps you feel understood and steady again. I offer a warm and collaborative space where you can talk openly about what you are experiencing while feeling supported to grow in ways that are both meaningful and sustainable. My goal is to understand you fully, help you reconnect with your strengths, and work with you to create a life that feels more manageable and more aligned with who you want to be. My approach is grounded in evidence-based care. I integrate DBT-informed treatment, CBT, relational therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies to help you understand the patterns and experiences that shape you while also building practical skills. Together, we focus on emotional regulation, coping tools, communication, boundary setting, academic stress management, and the internal pressures that often surface during college. Therapy is flexible, collaborative, and tailored to your needs so you can make real and lasting change. I have extensive experience working with adolescents and young adults in settings where emotional well-being and academic demands overlap. Alongside my private practice, I work at a specialized therapeutic high school where I support students managing stress, perfectionism, identity development, and transitions into college and adulthood. In this role, I coordinate DBT programming, provide training and consultation to faculty, and oversee the integration of skills into the broader school culture. I also supervise doctoral trainees, which reflects my commitment to high-quality, evidence-based care and to training the next generation of clinicians.
As a clinician with a decade of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a doctorate in clinical psychology, I bring a thoughtful, integrative, and person-centered approach to therapy. My work is grounded in a humanistic theoretical orientation, and I approach each therapeutic relationship with warmth, respect, and curiosity. I strive to create a space where clients feel genuinely heard and supported in making sense of their experiences, in their own words. While I prioritize a person-centered lens, I also draw from evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, tailoring treatment to meet each client’s unique needs. I am deeply committed to multicultural awareness, equity, and advocacy in clinical practice. I have extensive experience working with individuals who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S, and first-gen. My approach is affirming, identity-conscious, and culturally responsive, with an emphasis on honoring the complexity and intersectionality of each client’s lived experience. In addition to English, I am fluent in Mandarin and Shanghainese, and I welcome clients who may benefit from therapy in their native language. It is an honor and a privilege to support individuals in navigating life transitions, identity development, and emotional well-being with care, openness, and collaboration.
