Therapists for college students near New York University
We are moved to seek mental health treatment when traditional methods of self-care are not enough, when life becomes too much to handle on our own. Regardless of your specific issues, we will be exploring the ways in which creativity (especially music) can help you meet the challenges you face. Through our artistic collaboration and talk therapy, we will be able to discover patterns of thought and ways of relating that may be transformed through greater self-knowledge. Being musically talented is not a prerequisite for music therapy, just experience with the immense depth of feeling that music provides. As a humanistically oriented therapist, empathy forms the foundation of my practice. All material is welcome in sessions, and will be met with unconditional care. Part of our work together will be expanding our understanding of the material you present, and how best to use music to achieve your goals.
Before becoming a therapist, I was a college professor. My favorite part of the job was supporting students who were going through it, whether because of the transition of becoming a college student, or because they were experiencing mental health challenges for the first time--or a worsening of symptoms. I love working with clients who are dealing with perfectionism, people-pleasing/boundary setting, communication challenges (with family, roommates, friends, partners), general anxiety, social anxiety, depression, and OCD. I also have a lot of experience and passion working with clients navigating gender and sexuality, including being on the ace/aro spectrums.
My clients are often navigating intense emotional experiences—grief, anxiety, depression, or the impact of major life transitions like divorce, career shifts, or the end of important relationships. Many carry unresolved pain from trauma, abandonment, or difficult family dynamics and are seeking more than just surface-level coping—they want clarity, healing, and meaningful change.
My name is Mayra Ramirez and as a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field, I believe prioritizing your mental well-being is essential to becoming the best version of yourself. College is more than classes and exams — it’s a major life transition. It’s where independence, identity, relationships, and future goals all collide at once. In my practice, I work with those who feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or unsure about their next steps. Together, we identify patterns, strengthen coping skills, and build emotional resilience so you can move through this season with clarity and confidence. We will focus on helping you feel more confident, balanced, and in control during this important stage of your life.
I help young adults with anxiety and depression work towards managing their stress, finding their purpose and living their best life. In addition to counseling, I am an Art Therapist and can utilize creative means for self-expression, coping and self-exploration.

Hi all! I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist based in Brooklyn, NY. My early training focused on teens/adolescents who were justice-involved youth (NYC juvenile detention, probation camps, non-secure detention, and OCFS placements). During my doctoral training, I completed placements at Brooklyn College Counseling Program, in addition to several hospital inpatient and outpatient programs. In my private practice work, I have continued work with the young adult population that I love, working with treatment for a broad range of issues, including: children of immigrant parents/first generation students, academic stress, social skills/social group navigation, identity formation, gender and sexuality, and role transition concerns. I believe in good therapist match for best treatment outcomes—lets connect if you think I could be a good fit for you. :) Feel free to check out my website for more details.
We all get overwhelmed. New challenges can emerge, coping skills cease working, and new skills need developing. Therapy can help light the way. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, panic, depression, ADHD or everyday life becoming unmanageable, therapy can provide you with the tools to cope. I want to be there to support you during this process. Successful therapy starts with the formation of the counselor-client bond. Therapy is a relationship where a private, supportive, and non-judgmental alliance is fostered. Psychic injuries, biological dispositions, familial experiences, and successful life experiences shape our present. The past affects how we relate to others and why we carry wounds into the present. New and old life events can lead to self-destructive coping. Therapy can heal wounds and impart insight. Symptoms and diagnosis need not define us. We can learn to appreciate life’s joy and successes. Call for a no-fee phone consultation and start the journey. I practice an integrative approach to counseling informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Attachment theory. I specialize in the treatment of depression, bipolar, ADHD, and anxiety disorders. Other areas of concentration include improving self esteem, increasing assertiveness, improving interpersonal relationships, and managing life transitions. Our counseling experience starts with a no fee phone screening to see if we are a good fit. You and I will ask a couple questions to get an idea of what you are going through. If I have the right tools and you feel comfortable, we will proceed to the paperwork and setting up our first Telehealth session.
I believe everyone is an artist. My therapy works with the creative souls in all of my clients, from dormant creatives to professional artists. Unfortunately, we all experience trauma of some kind during our lives. Traumatic experiences leave scars on our bodies and our minds that can't speak through words. However, we can listen to and understand our unspeakable pain through the creative arts. Art and creativity are the guides that lead us to healing and solace. Talk therapy is a good a way to get to know you, your coping mechanisms, and identify your goals. We go deeper with creative arts such as drawing and writing, as well as working with the body and mindfulness. Most importantly, you will experience the sense of being understood and seen in the mind and heart of a loving, attuned human being. It is my honor to work with you and witness your precious vulnerability. Much of my effort goes to provide a protective environment so we can work at your own pace and comfort level. Finding a therapist requires courage, and asking for help is a sign of strength. Call me for a free consultation and we'll figure it out together.
Have you ever felt out of control? Struggled with drugs, alcohol, disruptive behaviors, or anger that seems to take over? If you're ready to make meaningful changes but aren't sure where to start, I'm here to help. I'm Rahim, a Mental Health Counselor Intern specializing in helping individuals overcome substance use, anger management issues, disruptive behaviors, career challenges, and performance stress. My ideal client is someone who's tired of feeling stuck and is ready to develop practical strategies to regain control of their life, improve relationships, and build a more fulfilling future. As a Behavioral Health Program Manager and soon-to-be graduate of John Carroll University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, I bring both professional training and cultural awareness to our sessions. I create a judgment-free space where teens and young adults can work through challenges while feeling truly heard and supported. I specialize in working with people who are experiencing life transitions, such as marriage, divorce, parenting, career, loss of a loved one, aging, and existential anxiety. Transitions can be stressful because it means you need to make changes in how you are living your life. I work with people who are at a crossroads of important decisions or who are having difficulties navigating and adjusting to a change in life circumstances. Going in a direction you have not gone before can bring up feelings of fear, doubt, and uncertainty. If you are trying to figure out what you want from your life, I will provide a safe and nonjudgmental place where we can explore your emotions, challenges, choices and possible consequences, and best approaches to move forward. Going through the process of taking stock of your life can often lead you to a new beginning which opens up new possibilities. With every life transition, we need to let go of a past way of thinking or being and replace it with something new. Together we can create a path towards change and healing.
Therapy is not about “fixing” you, it’s about understanding you. You are not broken-you are human. Being human means experiencing various complex feelings that can be difficult to navigate and understand, especially on your own. No matter what life throws you, you do not have to go through it alone. As a therapist, I aim to create a space where you feel safe, comfortable, and genuinely heard in a judgement free environment. Together, we can collaborate to help you reach a place of self-improvement and understanding through recognizing behavior patterns, processing complex emotions, and exploring solutions to any challenges you may be facing. When working with me, you can expect a relationship rooted in trust, empathy, and openness. Whether you need a space to process, vent, reflect, or simply breathe-I will meet you where you are at. I will show up for you authentically, even if it means gently challenging you and confronting obstacles head on. There is no rush when it comes to your progress. Think of me in the passenger seat and you are the driver-you are the expert of your life and your voice matters most. Nearly ten years ago, I began my personal journey with therapy during a time of major life transitions. What stayed with me was the feeling of unconditional support and understanding I received. For the first time, I felt truly seen and encouraged to be vulnerable. This experience sparked a sense of strength and empowerment in me that I strive to help my clients discover within themselves.

I am a board-certified, Cornell and Mount Sinai-trained adult and child psychiatrist in New York and California. My approach to treatment is holistic and firmly rooted in the science of the brain, combining psychotherapy (for individuals, families, and couples) with nutrition, lifestyle modification, as well as state-of-the-art medication treatment, when helpful. I view each person as a complex individual with a unique story to tell, so I take time getting to know my clients and work collaboratively to develop a targeted plan to achieve their treatment goals. I have expertise in treating depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, tic, ADHD, ODD, personality disorders, and eating disorders in children, teens, adults, and in pregnant and breastfeeding women. I also work with adults transitioning into parenthood, and with infants and toddlers. I am available for consultations and second opinions. I do not accept insurance (payment is out of pocket), but I do provide invoices for out-of-network claims. I do not take medicaid or medicare at this time.
I provide psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis for adult individuals of all ages, identities, and backgrounds. I use several therapeutic techniques and an integrative approach that is tailored to suit the needs of each individual patient. I believe in the transformative powers of honesty, authenticity and unconditional positive regard. Therapy is ultimately about meaning making. I listen closely to my patients without judgment and without jumping to conclusions. My goal is to understand you on your own terms—free of any rigid diagnoses or other labels. I believe that the heart of this work resides in the therapeutic relationship itself, and to this end, I seek to build bridges of clarity and comfort between us. Our work together will consist of attempting to understand you in a holistic, depth-oriented manner. We will consider how your past might be effecting your present—have you developed patterns in your life that are inhibiting and no longer serve you well? I understand that some people seek out therapy to address a discrete, well-defined issue, while others come out of a more abstract, gnawing sense that something in their life needs to change.
I practice holistically integrating an evaluation of overall health and lifestyle into my recommendations for possible medication options. You can learn more about me and my approach by visiting my website, www.drsaraiya.com
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor E. Frankl One of the greatest gifts we can grant ourselves is the gift of inner peace. While we may not have control over our environment, situations, or the actions of others, we do have the power to control our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. As a therapist-in-training, I am dedicated to helping clients identify and understand the connections between their thoughts, beliefs, actions, and the decisions that shape their daily experiences. My goal is to help you turn life's lemons into lemonade. We all encounter challenging experiences, and I understand the importance of having a robust support system, combined with the right resources, time, and commitment. My aim is to ensure you feel safe, understood, validated, empowered, and supported throughout our sessions. Together, we will explore various therapeutic interventions to identify the best fit for your individual situation. I am currently a second-year graduate student at UMGC/Salisbury-Global Campus, pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work. My experience includes working with wounded warriors and NATO allies stationed overseas, addressing issues such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, substance abuse, separation anxiety, and identity struggles.
