Therapists for college students near New York University
We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. I’m a psychologist who practices primarily from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches. Psychotherapy is a method of personal change and self-discovery through conversation. It’s unlike most conversations that we get to have in our day-to-day lives because no topic is off limits. The areas we delve into will include your stressors, relationships, sexuality, dreams, fantasies, anger, anxieties, and the unconscious motivations for your decisions.
I have worked at different university counseling centers in the past, including California College of the Arts, Barnard College, Columbia University, the Graduate Center of CUNY, and last in the role of assistant director of the counseling center at Fordham University. I have been in private practice for 20 years now, where I see many undergraduate and graduate students. The goal of my work with you is to help you make your life more fulfilling. Good psychotherapy will alleviate your personal suffering, and make you more resourceful emotionally and practically. It will strengthen your capacity to negotiate relationships, to love, and feel more alive and connected. I respect your intelligence, and aim for us to be collaborators in the process of psychotherapy. I listen closely to you and share my questions and observations with you. I am a psychoanalyst certified by NYU, where I received four awards. I completed advanced training in couple's therapy (White Institute). I published a book entitled "Immigration in Psychoanalysis," give talks, supervise and teach. Areas of specialty are: Our relationship to ourselves and others. Couples therapy, immigration and acculturation, childhood trauma, creative and work blocks. I work with a diverse group of people of different ages, class backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities, sexual identities and orientations. I see adolescents, adults and couples.
I have experience supporting clients through anxiety, depression, life adjustments, and their interpersonal relationships. My background has equipped me to help individuals navigate these challenges and work towards meaningful change. Throughout our sessions, my goal is to help you feel comfortable being vulnerable and open. By fostering a compassionate and empathetic understanding of yourself, I aim to support you in taking control of your life and finding a path that feels right for you.

Making the choice to enter therapy is one that is unique to each person. You might be experiencing a moment of crisis or loss, or struggling with moving through a life transition or change. Perhaps you are seeking therapy to overcome a sense of feeling "stuck" in your career, location, relationship—or because you are interested in alleviating feelings of anxiety or depression. Regardless of the reasons that have brought you here, you will be beginning a journey in a warm, safe, and compassionate space that will allow you to make positive change, improve connections and regenerate a sense of contentment and access to joy. Therapy will create the opportunity to identify patterns and behaviors that serve as obstacles and overcome them in order to achieve goals and progress forward.
I believe that we all possess the power to make lasting changes in our lives. We just need the right support. I take a holistic attitude to understanding the challenges my clients face, including paying attention to the importance of culture and environment. I believe that change occurs when we acknowledge intersectionality, the complexity of identity, and the important roles that social systems like family, religion, culture, class, gender, and race play in people’s lives, not when we ignore the broader picture and focus only on the individual. My goal is to walk with you on your journey and provide compassionate and collaborative guidance that fits exactly who you are while helping you move towards how you want to be in the world. I work with people dealing with a whole variety of mental health and mental wellness concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, spirituality, career and personal development, grief and loss, and life transitions. I have a special love for providing counseling to international students, immigrants, and refugees. Want to get started? Email me.
I use a psychodynamic approach which integrates spirituality and psychotherapy, helping people struggle with depression, loneliness, sexual abuse, drug addiction. I help couples and families learn to communicate their needs and feelings effectively. I work extensively with people suffering from chronic illnesses (e.g. AIDS) and those who care for them. I am a Clinical Member of AAMFT, a fellow with AAPC, and have certificates in Pastoral Psychotherapy, Marriage and Family Therapy and Group Psychotherapy.

College can break you in quiet ways. Maybe you’re burnt out but still grinding. Anxious but still pretending. You can’t focus, you can’t sleep, you can’t talk about it without feeling like you’re being too much—or not enough. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re just overwhelmed, and no one taught you how to deal with it. This is where that changes. Dr. Al-Katib works with college students who are overthinking everything, underperforming despite trying, and getting swallowed by pressure—academic, emotional, social, or all of the above. He helps with ADHD, anxiety, panic, burnout, identity, emotional numbness, and everything else that comes with growing up in chaos. His style is straightforward, respectful, and never sugarcoated. You’ll get strategy, clarity, and support that actually helps you move—not just talk about it. You don’t have to be falling apart to ask for help. But if you are—good. You’ve already taken the first step.
