Hi, I'm Michael, I understand that tackling life's challenges can feel daunting. We can feel overwhelmed, and not sure where to start. Whether you are going through a tough time or have been grappling with an ongoing mental health concern, therapy can be a tool to help you learn more about yourself and develop strategies to better manage these challenges. Prior to going into private practice I worked in college counseling for 5 years so I am familiar with the unique challenges college students face in managing their mental health while in school. In working with me, clients can expect to have a warm and non-judgmental space where they can work through personal challenges as well as work towards goals and areas of growth. Outside of work I enjoy catching a horror movie, hiking, and spending time with my diva of a cat. Some of my areas of clinical interest include, relationship and family issues, college counseling, trauma, anxiety, non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships, substance use, grief & loss, and depression. I have a passion for working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and have experience providing safe and affirming therapy for trans and non-binary clients. I invite clients to increase their self-awareness while aspiring to high levels of wellness: biologically, psychologically, relationally, sexually and spiritually. I offer a safe space free of judgment, filled with compassion and kindness towards your own process. My theoretical orientation to counseling is rooted in humanistic theories with underlying existentialism and phenomenological philosophies. I firmly believe in the therapeutic alliance and its curative power, in addition to striving to look at all situations from a sex positive, non-shaming, and non-judgmental lens.

I have practiced child, adolescent and adult psychiatry in Pittsburgh since 1976. I graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1972 and completed specialty training at the University of PIttsburgh School of Medicine/Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in 1976. I am a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, and bipolar disorders. My approach is to be thorough and to evaluate and treat each individual systematically and carefully. I have extensive experience with difficult to treat psychiatric conditions. I have a full time office manager and a 24 hour per day answering service. I am available for emergencies. Someone will always answer my telephone and all telephone calls are returned. My typical visits are from 20 to 60 minutes depending on the needs of each person.
