Hello, my name is Joel. If you are struggling with anxiety, relationships issues, mood changes, or daily struggles of being a student then we can work together on making it better. Difficulties come in all shapes and sizes and are personal to your experience. I have been in the field since 2004 and performing therapy since 2012. This progression with helping clients has been guided by a professional and person centered approach to help you meet your goals and desires. I have helped many students with issues ranging from anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship, self-esteem, and interpersonal issues. When you choose to work with me you will find an easy going, confidential, and strength based approach that will promote self-awareness, growth, and empowerment. I have an Undergraduate Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Appalachian State University, and a Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have recently relocated to NC from 7 years in VT and excited to be back in my home state of NC. Therapeutic approaches will include, but not limited to CBT, Reality Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, and DBT. Sometimes this world is not the easiest place to live as we do not have control over every circumstance. We do, however, have control over how we respond to life situations we encounter. As humans, controlling our behaviors, our thoughts, our feelings can be a struggle at times. Therapy is a safe place to process, to learn, to grow so that we can react more effectively to life circumstances and to gain more control. College students are about adjusting into adulthood, finding independence, and developing a sense of self and directions. This is the time to utilize therapy to assist in the development of who you want to become. Trauma, mood disorders, relationship problems, anxiety, are many areas that college students suffer from due to past experiences or experiences encountered in college. During our first session, you can expect a relaxed, welcoming space where you don’t have to have it all together. I take time to get to know you, understand what’s bringing you to therapy, and explore what you hope to gain from it. We’ll talk about your goals, what’s been challenging, and what “feeling better” might look like for you. My approach is conversational and collaborative. I meet you where you are and move at your pace. By the end of our first session, my goal is for you to feel seen, understood, and more hopeful about your next steps.

What I do: Individual Psychotherapy- I provide both in-person and telehealth treatment for teenagers, young adults, and adults, focusing a wide array of concerns including: life transitions, traumatic life experiences, daily functioning impairment, anxiety, and depression Gender and Sexuality Affirming Mental Health Care- I provide a safe space for those of you within the LGBTQIA+ community to process concerns unique to your own lived experiences Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)- EMDR is a research-backed treatment developed to help you heal following traumatic events by processing memories and gaining control over the way the trauma history impacts the mind and body. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)- CBT is used to help you understand and learn skills to challenge unhelpful or maladaptive thinking and behavioral patterns Mindfulness- Mindfulness techniques are used to teach you how to relate to your thoughts differently and to live in the moment
I work with teens and adults struggling with eating disorders, body image, self-esteem issues, perfectionism, OCD, anxiety, and trauma. I offer Christian counseling but see clients of all faiths and backgrounds.
